IV Star Ingredient: L-Carnitine

IV Star Ingredient: L-Carnitine

Supplements

Your body stores fat as energy to use later, but stored energy is only useful if your cells can access it. L-carnitine moves fatty acids into mitochondria to burn them for fuel. It just might be the boost you need to tip the scales in the right direction!

Every ingredient in our IV cocktails has a purpose, and each formulation is a precise blend. After exploring glutathione and its role in cellular health in the first of our IV Star Ingredient series, our next spotlight turns to L-carnitine.

Since the 1960’s, L-carnitine has been used as a therapeutic supplement.1 Today, it’s well-known for its involvement in the body’s ability to convert stored fat into usable energy. We’re cautious about promoting anything as the next great “miracle drug,” and that goes for L-carnitine also. We will say that it supports one of the most fundamental processes in metabolism.

Body Fat Needs a Catalyst to Burn

The body doesn’t simply burn fat when it needs energy – it’s a sophisticated process. Stored energy (e.g., fat) isn’t useful until your cells can access it and convert it into a form they can use.

L-carnitine is a naturally occurring compound made from the amino acids lysine and methionine. Your body produces some on its own, and you also get it from certain foods like dairy and red meat. Its primary job is remarkably specific: transporting long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria, the “powerhouses” of your cells and where fatty acids are converted into energy to supply everything from cognitive activity to physical activity.1

Because of this basic role in fat transportation, L-carnitine has become closely associated with metabolism and energy production. But it doesn’t induce weight loss on its own. What it does is complement healthy habits that are already in place (like nutrition, regular exercise, or medically supervised weight-loss treatments). In fact, a large meta-analysis of 37 randomized controlled trials found that L-carnitine supplementation produced modest reductions in body weight, body mass index (BMI), and fat mass among overweight and obese adults. Researchers concluded that while L-carnitine isn’t a stand-alone weight loss solution, it may provide supportive metabolic benefits as part of a comprehensive weight-management strategy.2

Each Ingredient Has a Job

So, what’s the big picture?

Whether you’re following a structured meal plan, increasing your activity level, or incorporating GLP-1 medications into your care, your body still depends on countless cellular processes to support those efforts – it’s the result of many systems working together.

Our specially formulated Weight Loss Support IV includes three synergistic ingredients: L-carnitine, B-complex vitamins, and glutathione. L-carnitine is part of the fatty acid transportation system, while hydroxocobalamin (B12) enhances energy and stamina. B-complex vitamins are essential in nearly every biological process, and glutathione helps the body’s natural detoxification pathways. Working together, they support and boost the body’s natural metabolic processes so you can continue putting in the work and getting more out of your diet and exercise.

In tune with MIIS’s philosophy, the Weight Loss Support IV is thoughtfully formulated rather than a collection of trendy nutrients. Each ingredient has a distinct purpose, working alongside the others to provide comprehensive metabolic and wellness support.

We believe meaningful wellness starts at the cellular level. A lot of programs whittle weight loss down to eating less or moving more, without emphasizing the importance of giving your body the support it needs to make the most of those efforts. Whether you’re pursuing weight loss, looking for an energy boost, or simply investing in your overall wellness, the team at MIIS Wellness Institute can help you determine whether IV therapy is a good fit.
